Lamb Weston / Meijer | Potato Dippers

LWM wanted to show the versatility of one of their products, the Potato Dippers, to their target audience. Part of this campaign was a number of social media posts showing recipes for the three key meals on a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

3D-scanning

Before we could start to visualise or animate anything we had to replicate believable, realistic and tasty looking Potato Dippers in 3D. The traditional way of modeling/sculpting and texturing proved unsuccessful, wielding results that just weren’t good enough.

After some experimenting with 3D-scanning the results were already looking much more promising. A collection of fried dippers were scanned and the best 3 were selected to be processed further. The scanned mesh was cleaned up and retopologised, UV’s had to be fixed and the high-res textures extracted from the original scans were re-assigned en touched up were neccesary.

The optimised mesh and textures weren then brought into Cinema 4D and textured and rendered with Octane.

The Storyboard

Now that we were confident that we could visualise the Potato Dippers in 3D with the quality we, and most importantly the client, wanted to achieve it was time for a brief storyboard outlining the shots. Due to the fact these animations were going to be used on Social Media they had to be short so viewer wouldn’t loose their attention. The target duration had to be 15 seconds or less.

Since the 3 animations were part of the same campaign, it was decided we were going to use just one universal storyboard for all 3. Merely the ingredients were going to be swapped and some slight changes in camera angles between the animations.
